The Journey
|
Horizontal - love others. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:35-39) |

The horizontal journey requires us to see one thing primarily: You can't separate it from the vertical. They are forever connected. Some Scriptures in 1 John give us some feel good words like... well, "Liar." Yep. If you read in 1 John 4:20, you find some insights from the Apostle John: "If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen." Our love for God translates naturally into love for man. They are intertwined. It's like faith and works. We are taught in James 2:17 that faith without works (i.e.- deeds, action, etc.) is a dead faith. A real, alive faith produces action. And a real, alive faith in Jesus Christ produces deep love for others. The essence of the gospel is grace, and grace freely received puts us on common ground with everyone else. Author Steve Brown puts it this way: "Because grace runs down hill, it's very important that you not stake out your territory at the top of the hill." By loving others, we love God, and as we receive love from God, we learn how to truly love others. |
