The Journey

vertical - love God.

inward - grow.

horizontal - love others.

outward - serve.

Vertical - love God.

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  (Matthew 22:35-39)

Jesus came into this world as the son of a carpenter, and as such picked the trade up Himself.  If He had been the son of a master chef, things would have been pretty radically different.  Well, at least that whole feeding of 5,000 people might have included basil and thyme, with some baby reds on the side or something...

Even though Jesus was not a chef, He was still the master of reduction!  He had a way of keeping things simmering, boiling down every conversations around Him until the real essence of His words were seen.  Like this moment with the religious leaders of His day.  Always trying to prove they were top dogs in keeping rules, they asked Him which rule was the most important.  And Jesus boils it down for us.

We were created to know and love God.  To love Him with our heart, soul, and mind.  All that we have.  With a lens like that on life, it radically transforms our actions, habits, thoughts and priorities!  Which is the power of grace:  We don't have to live for a lesser life of religion.  We can embrace the raw, beautiful love of God as it transforms our hearts from being satisfied with rules, and makes us hungry for a holy, pure heart.

Now that's some gourmet food.
